One of my favorite authors released the sequel to her book, I'll Be There, this summer! This is a great story of friendship, family, love and protection. Holly Goldberg Sloan is a talented author and I wish I could sit down and have coffee with each of the characters in her novels. Check them out - both great reads!

First off - check out Emery Lord's website - very cool! It's at http://www.emerylord.com/. Emery Lord will be attending Teen Book Con this year on April 26, 2014 and I am excited to meet her! This story is a great one - a hopeful and beautiful read. I really enjoyed the main characters - Reagan, Dee and Matt. The best thing about this book is that the characters are not perfect, but they still learn to love and be vulnerable with each other. If you want to read about an unusual and fun summer road trip between friends, then check out this book! I give it 5 out of 5 stars! Last fall, I had the privilege of meeting MIndy McGinnis in Austin at a book festival. She is a librarian in Ohio and this is her first book. I enjoyed this book from beginning to end! The setting is in Ohio and the water supply has run out for the cities and country side. Lynn lives with her mom in a house by a lake and they purify their own water for drinking, cooking, and bathing. Their lake is as precious as gold, so they must defend it with everything they have...which means using guns for protection. From a very young age, Lynn learns to shoot anyone who tries to take their house or water. She lives a very hardened life until some new people come into her life - Stebbs, Eli and a young girl named Lucy. I would definitely recommend this book! I know it's been a long time since I have blogged. We have been busy here in the library with classes, teachers, and helping set up our Rachel's Challenge Event! At home, I have been reading After Iris at home. This book has been recommended to me by a few ladies at the Blue Willow Bookshop. I have really enjoyed it and hope to finish it this weekend! Blue is a young girl who lives in London with a quirky older sister and two younger siblings. She is struggling because her twin Iris passed away three years ago and since then she has felt invisible. It feels like her family is falling apart and that her older sister is invading her life. Even though I haven't finished reading this book, I would highly recommend it. It's a great story of hope and family. Ms. A and I met a new friend at the Tweens Read Conference...Lisi Harrison! She is the author of the popular series, The Clique and Monster High. Her new book is called The Pretenders and it is written in diary form. Basically there are five kids at a high school and their English teacher challenges them to fill a whole notebook with their thoughts and feelings. So the book is full of raw emotion, funny stories, and of course lots of drama. It was a quick read and one I would recommend for reluctant readers. It was so much fun to met Ms. Harrison and hear about her books! On October 19th, Ms. A and I went to the Tweens Book Festival in Pasadena, TX. It was a great time of seeing new authors, seeing old friends, and buying new books! We got to talk to Lee Bacon again and he remembered our exciting author visit from last year! I finished reading book 2 - The Nameless Hero - and he said to tell everyone at SBMS hello! So hello from Lee Bacon! Last year we had Lee Bacon visit SBMS to tell us about his first book, Joshua Dread. The second book The Nameless Hero released on September 24, 2013. Mr. Bacon's publisher graciously sent me a copy of the new book. I started reading it last night and it has already started off with a bang! A monstrous substitute librarian looking for Joshua and Sophie. I will keep you posted on how it goes! Have a great 3-day weekend! Book Cover for The Nameless Hero. Digital image. If you have not checked out Blue Willow Bookshop, you must stop by! They are our local indie book shop and take great care of Spring Branch I.S.D.! You can find their information at: http://www.bluewillowbookshop.com/. One of the recommendations was this book, My Mother's Secret. It is based on a true Holocaust story and it is just beautiful. I read it in two days, but could have easily read it in one sitting. Normally I am not a big fan of Holocaust stories because they are too sad, but this one was told with hope and love. Franciszka Halamajowa and her daughter Helena risk their lives to hide Jewish families and a German soldier during WWII in Poland. Franciszka's ingenuity and bravery challenged me personally. I am still amazed at how these two ladies worked together to save the lives of so many. Thankful that Ms. Witterick explored the lives of these ladies to write such a beautiful story! The first book I read this summer was the sequel to The False Prince by Jennifer Nielsen. It's called The Runaway King. This was a great sequel and in tradition with young adult literature right now it is the second in a trilogy. I am looking forward to the third one this fall.
Another book I read was The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern. I read this one for my monthly book club with friends. It was a great read! It is a fantasy novel and I enjoyed all the different aspects of the world Ms. Morgenstern created. It was a lot of fun to discuss the book at our monthly meeting because everyone had VERY different opinions of this book. In the spring, I saw Chris Crutcher speak at TeenBookCon and wanted to read his new novel, Period 8. I made it through the book, but it was definitely outside of my comfort zone. This is a high school read or even college age read. After I read it, I needed something happier to read so I turned to Lauren Morrill's book, Meant to Be. I am currently reading it and enjoying the fun-loving spirit of the book. Hope you all are having a great summer. |
